This page is for people who have changed their name, and need to update their other identity documents.
There is also information for people who have:
- changed their name at the same time or after changing their record of sex.
- changed their name due to marriage, separation or divorce.
After we register your change of name, we will issue you:
- a new birth certificate, if you were born in Victoria
or - a change of name certificate if you were born overseas.
The certificate will show your current name.
The certificate is valid for all legal and official purposes.
This page explains how to use the certificate to update your other identity documents.

What information will be on my new certificate?
Born in Victoria
When you change your name, you get a new birth certificate. It shows your:
- new name, and
- name at birth.
A history of changes is on the back of the certificate.
An exception to this is if you have changed your name at the same time as you changed your record of sex, or after.
Born overseas
When you change your name, you get a change of name certificate. It shows your:
- New name
- Former name.
The back of the certificate shows a history of the changes.
Do I need to update my details anywhere else?
If you’ve changed your name, you must update your other identity documents.
These may include your:
- Driver licence or learner permit

- Electoral enrolment
