Where can I find it?
Not everyone is offered online proof of identity. Where it appears is determined by what you’re applying for.
This service is only available to eligible people. If it doesn't appear on your screen, you're not eligible.
If you’re applying for one of these...
Proving your identity online with Service Victoria is available for the following products:
Certificates
- Birth certificate
- Change of name certificate
- Death certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Relationship certificate
- Single status certificate (certificate of no record)
Registrations
- Change a name of a person born in Victoria
- Change a record of sex
- Relationship registration
- Relationship revocation
If offered, online proof of identity is available after you have:
applied online
answered questions about your documents and smartphone.
If you’re applying to get a recognised details certificate
You can prove your identity by uploading documents or by post.
If you don’t see an offer, then it is not available. You must provide identity documents.
I wasn’t offered it. What do I do?
If you weren’t offered online proof of identity, then it is not available to you.
You need to prove your identity by supplying documents:
Why wasn’t I offered it?
Either:
- The service couldn’t find enough of your details in its verification system, or
- Your answers indicated you don’t have the documents or smartphone required.
BDM cannot predict or control who will be offered this service.
Online proof of identity is provided by a third-party service. The service compares details with external data sources.
If these data sources don’t contain enough information about you, or the details don't match, the service cannot verify your identity.
It works this way to protect your privacy and prevent identity theft.
